SIC was honored to help plan this amazing event. The film festival featured the top three documentaries from the 150 submissions to this scholarship competition, ranging from issues of prostitution to shame to teen pregnancy. The films were all made by girls and about girls. The intersection of film and social change was powerful, clearly sharing the severity of these problems. The audience also had the opportunity to hear from sponsors and speakers who inspired us to learn more about the problems facing girls and women around the world, encouraging us to think about raising awareness and creating solutions. The entire eye-opening event was inspirational, and we can’t wait to see how the participants of “Girls Impact the World” go on to change the world.

Synergy, a subsidiary initiative of the Social Innovation Collaborative, acts as a student-run incubator for social enterprise related startups. This year’s Synergy team was led by Sheba Matthew ’13, Sandy Liang ’15, Anh Ha Ton ’15, Manik Bhatia ’16, and Bernadette Lim ’16. Participants’ startups included: a website that seeks to facilitate the financial aid process in college admissions, a technology that supplies cheap renewable batteries, an online network allow for anonymous gift giving, and a social media site that allows users play computer games to donate food. Guest speakers and mentors came from Harvard College, HBS, the Innovation Lab, as well as the greater Boston area in a variety of fields from non-profit to venture capital. Affiliates included Krishna Gupta of Romulus Capital, Peter Boyce of Rough Draft Ventures, and acclaimed author Nina Vasan, author of “Do Good Well.”

Another amazing conference!

Congratulations to the Harvard College Social Innovation Collaborative Summit Team for the 3rd Annual Igniting Innovation Summit on social entrepreneurship.

Around 200 students, professionals, and academics from across the country arrived at Harvard on Saturday, October 6, 2012. The summit is the largest undergraduate-run social entrepreneurship event at Harvard, lasting a total of 11 hours. This year’s theme was “Voice Your Passion” and featured 4 TED-style talks, 12 panel discussions, 6 self-expression workshops, and an innovation showcase by 53 leader-innovators.
